The energy price cap: what it is, and what it is not
Until 30 September 2026 the price cap for a typical home on gas and electricity paying by Direct Debit is £1,663 a year. From 1 October to 31 December 2026 it rises 4% to £1,723 a year. The cap limits the price per unit and the daily standing charge, not your total bill.
Who can get it
Everyone in England, Scotland and Wales on a standard variable (default) tariff. It does not cover fixed tariffs.
How to get it
Nothing to apply for. If you are on a default tariff it applies automatically. Your bill still depends on how much energy you use.
